Middle East Crisis Sparks Flight cancellations at South African Airports

(MENAFN) Escalating military tensions in the Middle East have sent ripple effects across the globe, with South African airports now grappling with widespread flight cancellations as regional airspace closures tighten their grip on international aviation.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the country's state-owned airport authority, confirmed in a Sunday statement that the closure of UAE airspace has directly disrupted operations for major carriers, including Emirates and Qatar Airways.

The disruptions span three major hubs. O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg bore the brunt of the fallout, recording eight cancellations — seven outbound and one inbound. Cape Town International Airport logged four outbound cancellations, while King Shaka International Airport in Durban reported two additional outbound flights grounded.

"Passengers are strongly advised to contact their airlines or relevant embassies directly for the latest flight schedules and status updates," ACSA said, adding that it "remains committed to the safety of all travelers, and our thoughts are with those impacted by these disruptions."

Separately, Cape Town Tourism issued its own travel advisory, urging travelers to verify all arrangements prior to heading to airports and to reach out to airlines or travel agents for rebooking support and guidance.

With no timeline in sight for a return to normal operations, authorities have stopped short of indicating when the disruptions may ease — as hostilities across the Middle East show little sign of abating.
