Mideast Energy Tensions Marks Significant Escalation
Although South Pars contains the world’s largest natural gas reserves, Iran’s ability to export gas is constrained by international sanctions. Most gas from South Pars is used within Iran, with only limited exports going to Iraq and Türkiye.
Israel targeted the South Pars field and the nearby Asaluyeh processing hub on March 18. In response, Iran carried out strikes on Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and notably Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, which is the world’s largest LNG export center.
